About Betty

I am a married father of 4 (not what you expected) who obtained the nickname “Betty” (after Betty Rubble) from both my laugh and my ability to keep house while all are away at school and work.

I am not a stay at home dad, although somedays I feel like one.  My schedule is very flexible which allows me to be an active participant and father to my four children. I feel as though I have a very unique incite to my kids and parenting in general.

This blog is dedicated to all the fathers who stay home, clean house, do laundry, pick up their kids from school, juggle after school sports, handle the household finances, make dinner and are basically overlooked by todays “women do it all” and “men are portrayed as dumb and lazy” society.

  1. Betty, you have always amazed me at what you are able to do for your family, friends, church and community. Thanks for making me think more often than I want to sometimes. To answer your question about what I am proud of…… I am very proud of being married for 19 years to the same guy and having a great teenage son.

  2. I don’t post to blogs very often. I am moved to post to yours. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with your wife and you/kids. My husband had ALL. We thought he had the flu. With 5 kids of my own, I know the juggle will be taxing. Fight the fight.

  4. Hi. I’m in desperate need of some advice on how to find myself again while dealing with my husband’s illness. Somewhere in the last year, I am no longer who I remember being. Carrying this load has changed me and I want to find my way back. Do you know the way? I’ve searched and searched for ways to ground myself again and nothing seems to be helping.

    1. I still haven’t found myself either. I mean this is the new normal. It is a huge load to carry and unfortunately for me I thrive on chaotic situations. Even more unfortunate is the fact this chaotic situation doesn’t seem to hold an end date.
So what I have done is I have started to take small pieces of who I used to be and put them back in my life. Even if that means not doing or placing something else on the back burner.
Simple things like riding or working a horse. Something I did every day prior to my wife getting sick. Then when I’m done not dwelling on the fact or the negative of only being allowed to do it once this week because next week I will be to busy.
      Going fishing alone.
I used to fish all the time with myself, the kids, who ever, but since this started I come up with every excuse in the book not to go. So forcing myself once a month regardless reminds me how important that small piece of time is for me.
And of course writing. Sometimes it’s at 11:30 when I have finally gotten everything ready for the next day, finished the laundry and cleaned the kitchen. But doing it no matter how tired because writing helps to shed a heavy load.
So my advice to you is simple; start looking looking for yourself.
Not the whole self, it’s just not possible right away, but smaller more manageable portions of your former self. Find them, chip them away and get to work. Eventually you will be back or at least some resemblance of you.
